TYLENOL POISONINGS

Although often cited as an example of pro-social ethical corporate behavior, the case of the Tylenol poisonings bears repeating.

In Chicago, during September and October 1982, seven people died after taking Tylenol pain-relief capsules that had been laced with cyanide. Tylenol is made by Johnson & Johnson. At the time it was the company’s best-selling product and the most popular pain reliever in the United States.

Almost immediately, Johnson & Johnson announced a massive product recall and free replacement program at an estimated cost of $100 million. The company also offered a $100,000 reward for the arrest of the person responsible for the poisoning. No arrests were ever made. The investigation revealed the poisoning to be limited in scope, so within a few months, Tylenol was once again offered for sale, but now with tamper-resistant packaging. Within a year, Tylenol sales had rebounded.

Even though the Tylenol poisonings occurred in 1982, it remains virtually iconic as a symbol of corporate integrity and ethical action in crisis. There can be little debate that Johnson & Johnson acted in a pro-social manner and did what was best for society, acting for the greater good.
